Winter in Austrian Alps

Skiing and Snowboarding in Austria
Beginners and expert skiers alike feel right at home on the varied slopes of the Alpine ski resorts. Ranging from gentle practice slopes to highly challenging runs, you will be sure to find the ideal spot for you to show off your skills. Excellent ski schools provide classes as well as private instructors and the reputation of their expertise travels well beyond the alpine region. Snowboarders will find fun parks and special snowboard facilities, and endless miles of cross country tracks take sports enthusiasts to the most beautiful hidden spots in the Alps.
Austria is famous for its ski schools, which date back almost to the beginning of the 20th century. Having played a major part in the development of skiing styles and techniques, they provide state of the art instruction, seasoned with Austrian charm and “Gemuetlichkeit”. Another great aspect about skiing in Austria is that the slopes are dotted with cozy sun terraces, charming skiing huts and excellent restaurants, because after an exhilarating day of physical activity, we Austrians love to reward ourselves with warm and satisfying meals or simply a mug of hot chocolate in the afternoon sun.
Winter Resorts in Austria
Alpine resorts are much more than plain winter sports villages. Although you will find facilities and infrastructure for almost any sport imaginable, you will feel equally satisfied if you just want to revel in cultural activities, relax and have fun. Offering cozy, family run bed and breakfasts as well as luxurious five star hotels, spas and fitness facilities are never far away. High quality standards make traditional local fare as much an experience as an exquisite gourmet meal in the many top restaurants. And for activities during the day, try a fun sleigh-ride through the picturesque landscape, join the apres-ski scene, or put on ice skates to enjoy your resort from a different perspective.
For years the quaint Tirolean village Neustift has been a favorite with travelers. As gateway to the Stubai Glacier ski area, it offers fantastic year-round skiing. High up in the Alps, the Arlberg encompasses the twin resorts of Lech and Zürs in the Vorarlberg province, and St. Anton in Tirol. While both sides of the mountain offer outstanding skiing experiences, Lech and Zürs are truly upscale and a bit more relaxed, while St. Anton prides itself with its bustling nightlife and international flair. Another beautiful resort is Zell am See. Nestled right beside a lake and two imposing mountain ranges, this quaint town offers one of the most scenic settings of any winter resort. The skiing areas are delightful and the nearby Kitzsteinhorn Glacier offers snow guarantee.
Christmas Markets in Austria
One of the most popular traditions in winter are the Christmas Markets that spring up in every big and small town during the month before Christmas Eve. Emanating a warm and cozy atmosphere, these markets offer all kinds of handicrafts and Christmas decorations. Mulled wine and delicious foods draw crowds and many Christmas markets become a gathering spot where people meet to chat and enjoy the festive mood.
During Advent, an almost tangible aura of expectation and celebration lies over the land. Christmas Markets are an important part of long standing folk traditions: In Vienna, for instance, the Christmas market held in the large square in front of the City Hall can be traced back to the year 1298. Schönbrunn Palace houses its own cozy market in front of the former Habsburg summer residence. In wintry Salzburg the Christmas Market takes over the square in front of the Cathedral with its picturesque stalls, while the tree vendors occupy the Residenzplatz on the side of the huge Baroque building. Just outside of Salzburg is the village of Oberndorf, where the song “Silent Night” was first sung on Christmas Eve of 1818.
Winter Events in Austria
Apart from the celebrations in the weeks preceding Christmas eve, there are many other festivities, concerts, exhibitions and other events to choose from. Being a winter sports region, ski races, of course, are very popular, as are winter opening celebrations and apres ski parties. Towards spring, the carnival season starts, and parades abound in small and big towns alike.
Among the events not to be missed if you are a winter sports fan is the Winter Opening Arlberg every year in November. The region is known for its elegant resorts, beautiful landscape and excellent skiing and there is no better place to start the winter season.
